The origin of this hymn tune is unknown, though it has been attributed to Beethoven or some other Austrian or German composer. It was first included in William Gardiner's Sacred Melodies, published in 1815. The tune has been associated with a number of hymn texts, probably the best known of which are "Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life" and "Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness." This arrangement in the FIVE OR MORE series is designed to accompany congregational singing, or to stand alone.
