This is a short, yet powerful piece, designed as a service opener or fanfare for orchestra. In addition to the listed parts, the composer has given suggestions for additional instrumentation. These suggestions are printed on the score, and are accomplished by having other instruments double existing parts to add additional strength and color. The piece ends in G major, the same key as the hymn on which it based. This makes it possible to go directly from this piece into congregational singing of the hymn, "All Hail the Power of Jesus Name." "A Royal Diadem" also stands alone as a strong service introit.
