Beginning the fanfare which leads immediately to the chorus and then verse, the ensemble vamps on harmonies built on a series of fourths. Creating a picture of the struggle of a Civil War battle, it is followed by a victorious, full ensemble treatment of the chorus. Throughout the work a variety of colors are used, and as one might expect of this patriotic selection, it ends with a large, triumphant climax.
