A solo cello begins this beloved melody with no other accompaniment. On the second phrase, the viola joins the cello with the viola playing the melody and the cello harmonizing. In like fashion, the 2nd violin joins in and then the 1st violin. Each time the melody changes instruments and the group expands. There is a modulation that follows and the piece comes to a beautiful conclusion. This is a nice piece for a prelude or an offertory. Playable by high school players yet sophisticated enough to interest professionals.
