A short, pretty piano introduction leads to the classic "The Old Rugged Cross," first stated in the cello. Soon the viola joins in harmony and the violins enter one by one until the entire ensemble is playing. In similar fashion, the medley introduces "Beneath the Cross of Jesus," modulates, and then moves into "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." A final key change brings a reprise of "The Old Rugged Cross," and ends in satisfying resolution.
