Beautiful harmonies grace this introduction, which is based on the closing statement ("Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace") of the melody. From its highest point, a descant to the melody is heard in the lower range of the violin. An occasional transposing of the octaves in the melody gives a nice effect, and the last phrase holds, waiting graciously while the cello revisits the opening strains of the melody. The rest of the ensemble moves to a warm and satisfying ending.
